I really enjoyed Mr. Shea's THE COLOUR OUT OF TIME novel, a take-off on a similarly-titled short story by H.P. Lovecraft, but I'm sorry to say I have not, as yet, been able to get involved with POLYPHEMUS. I found both the writing and the storyline quirky and irritating, totally unlike the Lovecraftian novel I'd enjoyed so much by this author. I met Mr. Shea and his son at a Lovecraft Film Festival a few years ago when I was also a guest. I have great respect for both men, and I felt honored when Michael Shea congratulated me on the reading I did from one of my tales, saying the reading moved him. I wish he'd written or will write more straight-forward fiction as he has a great style at times and a wonderful imagination. In this particular case, however, the book did not appeal to me.

Give this book a miss, and pick up something--anything--by H.P. Lovecraft instead.
Fantasy, science fiction, horror, and adventure in varying literate but usually over the top blends. Worth the admission price (at least the paperback price) just for "Autopsy", a most unusual story combining gross physical nastiness with humane personal triumph. Guarantee you won't soon forget it. Over the years I've read extensively from the spooky literature canon, and most of the books have been recycled, donated, given away or destroyed (as appropriate), but this one is the proverbial "keeper".
Michael Shea is one one of the most underrated writers EVER. Many years from now he will be considered a legend but for now he is far ahead of his time. Shea's prose is unique and challenging with a persistent flurry of esoteric adjectives and charming nuance, but for those brave enough to enter his intimidating yet fascinating realm the rewards are certainly GREAT! 'Polyphemus' is a perfect example of Shea at his finest. A sci-fi masterpiece with a horrifying undercurrent that will leave you staring off into space long after finishing it. You don't READ Shea, you become entranced and EXPERIENCE Shea. Dare to do so and you'll understand why I'm such a huge fan.
